Module 1: Map Critique

For this assignment, we were given several maps within the repository to choose from. We chose two maps either within the repository or on our own to evaluate using the template provided. My chosen map is shown below and either labeled well-designed map or poorly designed map. My synopsis of each is also provided below.

Well-Designed Map:

Synopsis: This map clearly depicts the water supply intake, preserved open space and farmland within Manasquan. Some things I like about this map is its use of a clearly labeled title, use of appropriate legend size and labels. It also has essential map elements including a north arrow, scale bar and inset map when appropriate. The author also include credits which state who made the map, date the map was made, its sources. I will note I think the boundary lines make it a bit harder to read and it might have been nice to include a base map.

Poorly Designed Map:

Synopsis: I have know I what this map is for. I though maybe it was depicting artificial reefs since most of the points are in the water but it is missing all essential map elements. Even if they would've included a title might have been able to discern what the map was for. Overall, this is a very messy map that does not do a very good job at displaying its intended data.

Final Thoughts:

Between the two maps above, the first is clearly the better of the two maps. It does not include too much information to where the reader cannot determine the data in the map unlike the second map. The first map includes a title which is one of the most important things in map making because it tells the reader what the map is for. The first map also includes all context needed by providing a legend, scale bar, and north arrow. Finally the first map also gives the reader the credits which tells one who made the map, when, and by what sources.
